Seven Daughters

Seven Daughters is a tested and true offshore tuna pole and line fishing boat.

Engines

The engine room is accessed through a deck hatch by a near vertical ladder at the aft end of the accommodation. The engine room has good headroom, approx. 10' to the deckhead and is well lit. Forward of the engine room through a watertight door is the foe' s'le stores, there are ladder rungs in the foc's'le to an escape hatch on the fore deck. The foc's'le is used primarily as a store room.

On inspection the engine room is clean and organized with a good stock of spare parts and consumables which are well stored and secured. There is good redundancy in the systems in the engine room with spare bilge pumps, hydraulic pumps, deck wash pumps and air compressors which are plumbed and ready to operate in the event of failure of the primary.

There is a lot of additional electrical cables not run in cable trays or securely lashed. This is due to equipment added through the vessels operating life and from the re-wiring required after the cable damage caused by rats the previous year. Consideration should be given to securing of all electrical cables.

The bilges are clean, dry and virtually oil free.

Clear vinyl tubing has been used for the diesel oil storage tank sight glasses; consideration should be given to change these to an approved style of sight glass at next cycle for cleaning of the storage tanks.

It was noted that the forward diesel generator fuel supply line was made up of two sections of black hose which passed through a drilled hole in a steel frame. The hose is reportedly USCG approved however consideration should be given to use of a single hose without a joint under the deck plates and the addition of some chaffing protection where passing through holes in the frame.

The original 6" diameter sonar tube has been replaced with an 8" diameter tube to accept the new sonar. The installation was professional and well done.
The main engines and diesel generators exhaust systems are well insulated with no indication of any leakage.

The main engines are air start and the diesel generators are electric start

 

Accommodations

The galley and accommodation are behind the wheelhouse and consist of a galley on the port side with seating area on starboard with direct access to the wheelhouse. A dry stores with fridge aft of seating area. Access from main deck is by watertight door on the starboard side.

A central alleyway runs aft with a two-berth cabin, a four-berth crew cabin, washroom with single toilet, wash basin and shower stall. At the aft end of the alleyway is a new set of stacking washer and dryer, survival suit storage, engine room access through non-watertight deck hatch and aft main deck access through weathertight door. The accommodation is in good condition and finished with a mix of joiner panel, wood panel and a wood trim.

Compressor Space & Fish Holds

The Compressor space and fish holds are directly aft of the accommodation and accessed through a non-watertight door on the port side. The compressor space contains refrigeration compressors and associated electrical supply and control panels, refrigeration piping and valves. The refrigerant gas used in the system is R-507. Also contains the CO2 fire suppression system for the engine room. Preventative maintenance to the refrigeration system was in progress at time of survey.

The top fish freezer hold fish capacity is 11 tons and is accessed through doorway at the aft of the compressor room. The top fish freezer hold is a converted 20' insulated refrigeration shipping container which is solidly mounted to the deck. Fish enter the top hold from the main deck through an access door in the aft of the hold, from here they can be processed to the main hold or remain. There are two large air blast freezer evaporators in the top hold.


Access to the main fish hold is through a deck hatch in the top fish hold by vertical ladder. Main hold capacity is 63 tons. The main hold is fully insulated, the insulation on bulkheads and deckhead appears to be 95% intact. The deck has lost 80% of the original white paint/gelcoat topcoat however the remaining insulation is well adhered. Spray foam repair has been carried out where necessary. The hold is cooled by 8 air blast freezer evaporators with 21" fans.


The two tailshafts, stern glands and white metal shaft bearings are accessed in two longitudinal spaces at the bottom of the main hold. These spaces are open to the engine room through the forward hold bulkhead. While the hold is in use the shaft spaces are covered with non­watertight insulated hatches. Any water leakage from the stern glands is monitored by newly installed ultrasonic bilge level sensors which operate a 1" 'Jabsco' bilge pump in the engine room.

Decks & Wheelhouse Top

The main deck aft of the accommodation is covered with hardwood deck boards, the wood is kwila from New Zealand, the deck boards are recent and are in very good condition. Deck paint under deck boards in good condition. The main deck is surrounded with a 32" high bulwarks constructed of sheet aluminum with a pipe cap.
Stored on deck are additional spare freshwater tanks and refrigerant bottles for return.
At the stern are the fish landing tables and access to the Lazarette by a raised watertight hatch.

Port and starboard aft are two sets of double bollards for tie up. Constructed of aluminum pipe, welded to the deck and bulwarks for bracing.
Tank fill and sounding pipes are outboard by the bulwarks with either caps or goosenecks.

On top of the wheelhouse is the large tubular aluminum structure for support of the downrigger fishing poles. It is strongly fabricated from 6 ½" diameter aluminum piping. Two vertical pipes are connected into brackets outboard on the top deck directly above the housework bulkheads. There are three horizontal bars equally spaced up the length of the verticals, the top bar extends outboard and supports a yoke port and starboard for guiding the downrigger poles. Three cross braces fabricated of a smaller diameter aluminum pipe are situated between horizontal bars. There is a catwalk with handrail at working height below the top bar, accessed by ladder on the starboard vertical pipe. The height to the catwalk is approximately 24', estimated height of the top bar is 30'. The structure is supported fore and aft by aluminum pipe stays forward and wire rope stays leading aft to the main deck.

The downrigger poles are fabricated from 4 ½" diameter aluminum pipe with lattice bracing on aft side. They are hinged outboard at the base and operated by rigging at the top of the support structure. Estimated length of downrigger poles is 40'.

Noted on the foredeck that the wheelhouse forward windows recently replaced with heavy bolt on polycarbonate panels.

Noted that two dogs on the foc's'le watertight access hatch were removed and blanked. The closing for the hatch now reliant on the forward dog and the hinge. Also noted that the shore power cable passes through drilled hole in the port side of foc's'le access hatch trunking.

Underwater Hull & Side Shell

The vessel is a twin screwed, open wheel monohull with balanced rudders. It is built with a straight bow and a square transom. The side shells are flat plate, there is a rise of floor from the plate skeg to the chine, there are no bilge keels.

The underwater hull and side shell plating is in very good condition overall with minimal inset of plating between frames consistent with a vessel of this age and usage. Some light inset noted near the bow above the waterline. There is a fresh coat of antifouling paint, the topside paint is older but appears to be well bonded.

Several older, unused through hull fittings have had doubler plates welded over.
Four sets of channel coolers are welded to the hull bottom, one each for main engines and generators. Additional pipe coolers have been welded in series with the larger channel coolers, these mounted on flat plate stand-offs on the channel cooler.
Twin tailshafts are each carried in a hull bearing and a strut bearing, visually all four bearings have minimal wear.

The strut bearings are well supported with three struts each. The starboard inboard strut and the aft formed plate stiffener of the skeg both have a heavy weld build up at the joint with the hull plate, possibly indicating vibration problems in the past. Reported that no repair welding has been required for 10 years.
